On January 2nd, 2020 a US drone strike just outside of Baghdad International Airport killed Iranian General Soleimani and his associates. Pentagon officials state they had knowledge of “imminent and sinister” attacks on American in the region. Yesterday, the United Nations stated that the US has broken international law with the airstrike.
“Last night at my direction, the United States military successfully executed a flawless precision strike that killed the number one terrorist anywhere in the world, Qassem Soleimani. Soleimani was plotting imminent and sinister attacks on American diplomats and military personnel, but we caught him in the act and terminated him.”President Trump
Qassem Soleimani was a designated terrorist who had lead organizations and plots that killed US troops and civilians. The Iranian general was in Iraq as he worked with locals to coordinate his violent plans. The US Embassy in Iraq was under imminent threat, likely why Soleimani was nearby, and the US took action against this threat.
The United Nations apparently considers this wartime strike an extra-judicial killing. The Special Rapporteur on extra-judicial executions, named Agnes Callamard, say the US broke international law by killing Iranians. This seems to indicate the UN is supportive of Iranian terrorism against Americans and does not recognize the American military’s right to defend itself from attacks.
“Major General Soleimani was in charge of Iran military strategy, and actions, in Syria and Iraq. But absent an actual imminent threat to life, the course of action taken by the US was unlawful,”United Nations Report
United States President Donald Trump state’s that America’s policy is unambiguous when it comes to those who wish to harm Americans. He says the US military will find and eliminate terrorists to protect it’s diplomats, service members, all Americans and our allies. He elaborated on Soleimani’s long history of violent attacks on US personnel and stands proud of the US strike that took him out.
