The beautiful downtown park in Chicago looked like a battlefield overnight. Grant Park was ground zero of the continuing racial riots across the US this summer. Rioters targeted a statue of Columbus in the park and fought violently against the city’s unsupported police force. The statue was defaced with spray-paint reading “decolonize Chicago, Black Lives Matter, and Fuck12.”

Chicago Police have been doing a remarkable job holding the line considering the state of leadership in the city. Mayor Lightfoot has taken the side of the protesters and risked complete chaos as lower departments try to keep the situation from getting any worse.

CPD intervened just in time to save the statue. Rioters had fastened a pull rope around the neck and were actively pulling on it. Police rushed the base of the statue and secured the area, despite being pelted with rocks, water bottles, and fireworks.

Final reports are 12 people arrested and 18 injured officers. The area was cleared out by around 8:15 PM. The protest was organized by Amika Tendaji who describes the riot as a solidarity march for indigenous people and black people.

Violence in Chicago is reaching astronomical levels. Statistically it’s as bad as legitimate war-zones like Afghanistan. One might be better off taking their chances with the Taliban instead of shopping on the Magnificent Mile this summer.
