Portland Has Most Homicides in 30 Years After Gun Violence Unit Disbanded

The Pacific Northwest has been struggling with civil unrest. Race riots have lingered on for months and political leaders are compounding the problem by restricting police. The city experienced it’s highest murder rate in more than 30 years. In July the city experienced 15 homicides for a total of 24 so far this year. The Mayor shut down a specialized unit as part of a 19 point plan.

The specialized Gun Violence Unit was shut down by the city council. That unit of the police is critical to solving gun crimes. July had 63 shootings, more than double what it was last year. The Gun Violence Reduction Team was an instrumental part of crime solving efforts when shootings take place in the city. Solving crimes and apprehending suspects is an obvious method to keep crime from recurring and growing out of control.

Portland Police Crime Data

Mayor Ted Wheeler has routinely sided with rioters and been critical of federal efforts to restore law and order. The mayor released a 19 point plan that is certain to further undermine the safety and security of the city. In the absence of enforcement of laws, the criminal elements in a city will be quick to monopolize on the opportunity. Crime data shows that is what’s taking place right now, as violent crime of all types spikes in various metropolitan centers all over the country.

Ted Wheelers Plan includes taking $7 million out of the police budget and redirecting it to “communities of color.” He also wants to bring in a 3rd party for powerful oversight of the city’s workforce to make sure it “reflects the community it serves.” These racial criteria on city employment subvert the discretionary powers given to elected officials.

The plan also removes all officers from schools and dissolves the gun violence team. Wheeler wants to dissolve the police’s transit division. These continuous moves removing policing powers and law enforcement are turning Portland into a nightmare for residents. The Government’s primary responsibility is to provide security and safety for residents.

Late last month Mayor Ted Wheeler made the choice to join the riot and show his support. He came right up to the barrier of the federal courthouse that has been under attack for weeks. The visit was obviously a photo opportunity and the Mayor walked right into a crowd control situation and walked directly into tear gas.
