$100 Million Michigan Grant for Small Businesses Has Skin-Color Requirements

The Michigan Strategic fund has approved a $100 million dollar funding package for the Michigan Small Business Restart Program. This all sounds great until business owners learned about an odd requirement related to business owner’s skin color.

Michigan Economic Development Fund

The fund has requirements imposed by the legislature that 30% of the fund must go to minority owned businesses. This is ironic because in this country our laws are supposed to treat everyone equally. All business owners should qualify for taxpayer funded grants but in this case, a grant review board can reject you based on skin color.

The fund is supposed to be dispersed to businesses with 50 or less employees in grants below $20,000. In addition to those requirements the authors of the package decided skin color was a valid criteria for grant allocation.
